Coronavirus (COVID-19) and Oxford Bible Church Services

Updated Saturday 25th July

After reviewing the government's updated guidelines for Churches, and after consultation with Cheney School, we are pleased to announce that OBC Sunday Services will relaunch at Cheney School at 11am on Sunday 12th July. It is important that we adhere to the new guidelines and keep to social distancing measures when we return.

Please read the information below carefully, for full details of what to expect when we gather again. Don't worry if you're not able to join us at Cheney School - as all Services will still be Live Streamed on Facebook.

To watch the Live Stream visit OBC's Facebook Page here:

From Sunday 12th July & Ongoing

Arrival & Entry to Church

* Ushers will need to keep people at least 1.5 metres apart as you enter the building, so it may mean queuing briefly if many arrive at the same time. Of course, families and those from the same household can enter together.

* Upon arrival, everyone must wash their hands with soap and water, or sanitise their hands using the sanitiser dispenser provided by the School.

To comply with the government NHS Test and Trace Service we will also need a record of all people who attend each week. On a slip of paper, one person from each household should write their name, phone no. and/or email address, plus the names of all other family/household members who are attending the Service. The date of the Service must also be on the slip. Slips will be collected by Ushers upon entry to the Church.

Blank Test and Trace slips are available in the Lobby, although to speed up entry we do encourage you to write the details at home and bring them with you to Church.

These details will be kept securely by us for 21 days and then be destroyed.

During the Service

* Face Masks: The updated government guidance related to Coronavirus is that Face Coverings are now mandatory on public transport and also in shops and supermarkets. The latest guidance states that, People are also encouraged to wear face coverings in enclosed public spaces where there are people they do not normally meet, such as a place of worship. In line with this guidance we encourage and recommend that everyone wears a face mask while within Cheney Hall, unless you have a medical condition which makes this inadvisable.

Masks are available in the Lobby if you need one and should be disposed of after the Service. As well as safety for oneself, the wearing of a face mask is also a demonstration of love for others, showing care and consideration for them.

* The chairs in the Main Hall will be set up 1m apart, but we would like couples, families and those from the same household to move their seats to sit together, increasing the spaces between other chairs. Ushers will help you to your seats and oversee the seating arrangements.

* Normal congregational singing is not allowed under current guidelines, so one Worship Leader will lead at the front, with recorded songs played through the sound system. People should sing softly unto the Lord, but no louder than a normal speaking voice.

* There will be an offering bucket and offering bag with an Usher at the door, where you may place your offerings. The offering bags will not be passed around the congregation as usual.

* There will be no teas/coffees, other consumables, or Holy Communion for now.

* After the Service we kindly ask you to leave the main hall quickly and exit the building. It will then be possible for fellowship to happen outside, being sure to maintain social distance.

Children and Youth

* There will be no Children's Church in July. Kinder Church, Junior Church & Super Church (ages 3-13) will not resume until August. Teachers are working together to prepare a return to classes that will be safe and secure for all children.

* Youth Church (ages 13+) will start on Sunday 12th July, meeting separately in the Community Hall. The Youth Service will start at 11am, the same time as the Main Service.

Further Points

* There will be no Evening Services in July, only the Service at 11am.

* The Main Hall, including all surfaces, door handles, chairs etc will be thoroughly cleaned & sanitised.

* Anyone who has symptoms (the recent onset of a new continuous cough, a high temperature or a loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell) should not attend, nor should anyone who has been asked to self-isolate. Anyone who has been shielding, as per government guidelines, also anyone who has travelled in from abroad, must follow the relevant updated government advice.

* We understand that not everyone will be able to return to the Services at this time. You can still join us online, as Services will still be Live Streamed on Facebook each Sunday morning.

* Only the 11am Sunday Service is returning to Cheney School at this time. Other meetings, such as the Encounter Prayer Meeting on Fridays, remain closed. Also, Home Groups will continue to meet online only until further notice.
